In a divorce action, I provide a free initial consult as I would not hire an attorney without meeting them and I believe my view is shared by many in the community. While the free initial consult can be abused; where “client” had no intention to retain an attorney or is trying to prevent a spouse from retaining the attorney. Over my 20 years of practice, I have found such behaviors to be an exception rather than the rule.

The issues covered in the free initial consultation include jurisdiction, venue, children of the marriage or outside the marriage, division of assets and debts, whether there is an alimony claim, and finally whether a claim exists for attorney fees and costs.

One of the interesting aspects of family law is the way all the issues are connected. For instance, how assets and debts are divided can have an effect on an alimony claim which in turn can have an effect on child support.

If you or someone you know is considering filing for a divorce, please feel free to contact my office for an initial consult.
